Breast Augmentation is very popular among all age groups for a variety of reasons. Some women want to enhance their self image or may want to wear more flattering clothes. Pregnancy and breast feeding has a way of changing bodies in ways thought unimaginable before giving birth. Once a woman has decided that she does not want any more children, a breast lift and breast augmentation help restore and enhance a natural look. These procedures are done on an outpatient basis in our own surgery center in Ballantyne Village. Breast augmentation takes about one hour to complete. Using saline implants, the doctor will make a 1½ to 2 inch incision in the armpit. The only dressing will be a small bandage. If you choose silicone implants, an incision will be made in each armpit which will be 3 to 4 inches in length. This is required because silicone implants are filled before insertion, while saline implants are filled after insertion.

Both types of implants provide excellent results. Silicone feels more natural, but the implants are more expensive and require the larger incision. The FDA recommends that all women having silicone implants have an MRI every two years. Women under age 22 are not permitted to have silicone implants.

After the procedure there is little to no bruising, but swelling is common and may last for several days. Ice packs work well and may be applied to the upper area of the breast for 24 to 72 hours after surgery. You will be able to take your first shower after twenty-four hours. It is imperative that you avoid heavy lifting for one month. One key to preventing discomfort in the recovery period is to do stretching exercises as soon as you are able and to massage the implants after the first week. The recovery nurse will show you the stretches before you are discharged. At your first post op appointment, you will receive instructions on massaging the implants. You may return to work five to seven days after the procedure depending on your comfort level. Your scars will fade over time and should be difficult to see after one year.
