Understanding Acne

Even now, it is not fully understood exactly what causes acne. Most doctors will agree that hormonal imbalance and heredity are major factors in creating this dreadful condition. Poor diet, hygiene and stress are common factors that aggravate the condition, but they do not cause it.

There are many different treatments and products that are available right now; there is no one solution that fits all. In our office we have found a combination of prescription oral and topical medication in conjunction with FDA approved laser treatments works best for most patients.

If you would like to learn more about our Acne Treatment Program call 704 544-1300.

If you are ready to start, you can schedule a consultation with Dr. Drago who will evaluate your condition and find a combination of treatments that is right for you.

Acne is perhaps the most common of skin diseases; 85% of people between the ages of 12 and 24 suffer from acne while 20% of all adults suffer from active acne. While most commonly manifesting in individuals in their teens and 20's, acne often affects those in their 30's, 40's and sometimes even beyond. Acne has few boundaries and can occur on the face, neck, upper arms, chest, back and shoulders. While acne usually clears  up over time, its presence can cause severe psychological and emotional trauma to sufferers during outbreaks according to the British Journal of Dermatology. Untreated acne can cause permanent scarring and hyperpigmentation.

Acne is commonly described as a disease of a pilosebaceous units (PSUs). PSU's consist of a sebaceous gland connected to a follicle that contains a fine (vellus) hair While PSU's are found all over the body, they occur most densely on the face, upper back, and chest. Sebum normally empties onto the skin’s surface through the follicular duct, commonly called a “pore”. The defective keratinization of the follicular duct results in abnormally adherent epithelial cells that plug the duct with sebum and dead cells.

When the follicular debris pushes to the surface of the skin, the result is what we commonly call “blackheads”. Follicular debris that remains right below the opening of the pore results in what we commonly call “whiteheads”. Some comedones develop into inflammatory lesions, papules, pustules, nodules and cysts.

Photopneumatic (PPx) Pore-Cleansing Acne Treatment™

Photopneumatic (PPx) Pore-Cleansing Acne Treatment™ has revolutionized laser treatment of acne. Photopneumatic Therapy is the world’s first advanced acne therapy that harnesses the dual power of pneumatic, with the proven therapeutic qualities of selected filtered broadband light to painlessly treat the broadest types of acne.

Negative pressure lifts the sebaceous gland bringing it closer to the skin’s surface. When vacuum is applied, the elevated sebaceous gland is inverted and opened up, emptying its contents. Acne causing bacteria, sebum and other impurities including dead skin cells are ejected onto the surface of the skin where they can be easily wiped away.

If you are not a candidate for PPx Pore Cleansing Acne Treatment we recommend a series of chemical peels in conjunction with topical and oral medications.
